Psychiatric Evaluations

Psychiatric Evaluations – used for diagnostic clarification and for treatment planning.

What is a psychiatric evaluation?

These are the most common parts of a comprehensive, diagnostic psychiatric evaluation. However, each evaluation is different, as each person's symptoms and behaviors are different.

Evaluation may include:

  • Description of behaviors - when do the behaviors occur, how long does the behavior last, what are the conditions in which the behaviors most often happen.

  • Description of symptoms - physical and emotional symptoms.

  • Effects that behaviors or symptoms have in the various areas of life – work, school, family, work and social relationships.

  • Psychiatric interview – to gather information about moods, thoughts, behaviors, patterns to help with diagnosis and treatment plan.

  • Personal and family history of emotional, behavioral, or developmental disorders

  • Complete medical history, including description of the person's overall physical health, list of any other illnesses or conditions present, and any current treatments.

Medication Management

After the psychiatric evaluation, options offered to the patient may include medications. If this is an option desired by the patient and their family, we will work together to select  a medication. After education about adverse effects, the patient may start a trial of the medication. In one week to one month, the patient will return to the office to evaluate the effect of the medication. Medications can have varied and unexpected effects and we will closely monitor this. A change in medication may be necessary.

After the patient is having a decrease in symptoms and is feeling better on the medication, follow up visits may be as far apart as three months.

It’s important to note that not all patients and not all psychiatric problems require medicine. However, there are many instances where prescription medicines are helpful in relieving symptoms for the patient. Medication can be an effective part of the treatment of many mental illnesses such as:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Panic

  • Sleep problems

  • ADHD

  • Irritability/Anger
